Floating Floors Making Noise? Here's a quick fix.
What do you do when your beautiful handscraped floors are making popping noise? I recently had a job where we performed a floating floor installation of a beautiful red stained, maple handscraped floor. Everything was great until we walked on the floor and heard snap, crackle and pop sounds. The customer was very concerned as they are selling the house and don't want any problems with potential buyers.
The reason for the noise is that the handscraped wood has slight height differences on the planks which cause movement under the baseboard. When the wood moves up and down the floor makes noise as it slaps the concrete. The quick fix in this case was to install some mini plastic wedge shims (found in the tile section of Home Depot/Lowes. I hammered the shims under the baseboard, cut off the excess (be careful not to scratch the floor. I placed a piece of thin plastic under the exposed bit of wedge clip...cut it off with a sharp blade and further hammered the wedge under the baseboard until it was hidden. The wedges effectively shimmed the floor, stopped it from moving and eliminated the sound...problem solved!
